Yoon Kye Sang Talks About Upcoming Drama “The Winning Try” And His Role As A Rugby Coach

SBS’s upcoming comedy sports drama “The Winning Try” has released new stills featuring lead actor Yoon Kye Sang!

“The Winning Try” tells the story of Joo Ga Ram (Yoon Kye Sang), a former rugby star who falls from grace due to a doping scandal. Years later, he returns to his alma mater as the new coach of its bottom-ranked high school rugby team and leads the underdog squad on a quest to win the National Sports Festival.

The newly released stills capture both the comedic and serious sides of Joo Ga Ram. In one image, he wears a stern expression while standing in front of the rugby team, hinting at his firm determination.

Another photo shows him with a bright smile, interacting warmly with the players and actively leading training sessions.

In a written interview, Yoon Gye Sang shared his thoughts on the project, revealing what drew him to the drama. He said, “When I first received the script, I found it so engaging and fun to read. The story is anything but predictable, and the fresh subject of rugby as well as the unexpected charm of the character Joo Ga Ram immediately pulled me in.”

Reflecting on the similarities between himself and his character, he added, “Joo Ga Ram seems completely different from me, but there are parts of him that feel similar, which makes me grow even more fond of the character. He may appear lighthearted on the outside, but he’s quite serious within. There’s also a bit of an eccentric side to him, and it was fun exploring those layers.”

When asked about training for the role, he shared that he did not need any specialized rugby training since he was playing the coach. He said, “I did try training with the rugby team on site, but my stamina was so bad I had to give up halfway.”

He also had high praise for his co-star Kim Yo Han, complimenting both his visuals and acting skills. He remarked, “Kim Yo Han is not only handsome, but he also acts with sincerity that comes through in his expressions and eyes. Acting alongside him made it easy to immerse myself [in the scenes].” He then jokingly added, “If I had to score our chemistry, I’d give it 120 out of 100.”

Yoon Kye Sang wrapped up by introducing the drama in his own words: “If I had to describe ‘The Winning Try’ in a few words, I’d say laughter, joy, and happiness.” He continued, “It’s not just a story about rugby but also about people growing through challenges, falling, and getting back up. It’s full of humor and warmth. It’s something everyone can enjoy, and I think it’s a kind of drama that will leave viewers feeling good throughout.”

“The Winning Try” premieres on July 25 at 9:50 p.m. KST.
