Xdinary Heroes fans are regularly fed by the band, who must be one of the most prolific acts working at the moment. It feels like new music is always just around the corner, whether that’s in the form of fully-promoted comebacks or drips and drabs of digital singles. New single FiRE (My Sweet Misery) falls in the latter category, though I believe they will still be performing it on music shows.
Xdinary Heroes have released a handful of songs I enjoy and a few I dislike very much, but I admire their willingness to experiment with their sound. Being a band affords them more flexibility than idol dance groups and they’ve taken that opportunity to explore different rock sub-genres. FiRE leans further into crushing hard rock than they’ve ever gone on a single, and will likely find an audience that loves this energy. I can’t say I’m usually a fan of this style, though of course there are always expectations. A great song is a great song no matter how it’s arranged.
Unfortunately, FiRE is only a decent song. Beyond all the bombast (and there is plenty of bombast!), the melodies aren’t hitting me the way I’d hope. It’s all very heavy and immediate but after listening I can barely recall anything about the song beyond its bluster. It’s like a My Chemical Romance song without the great emotional chorus that makes moping around in thick eyeliner an enticing prospect.
