Just a day after her fellow Sistar member Hyolyn released a new single, Soyou is back with new music of her own. Two summers ago, she carried on Sistar’s sonic legacy with the excellent Aloha, but like Hyolyn she’s decided to explore different summer sounds with PDA.
PDA feels much more indebted to the early 2000s in the way so much recent K-pop has been. Its sprightly beat has that familiar ‘Neptunes meet Jersey club’ sound, hitting softly even as the tempo remains brisk. It’s a production that could have backdropped so many recent K-pop singles, making it amorphous when it comes to individual identity. However, the sound itself is winning and the public doesn’t seem to be tired of it yet.
This percussion works well against PDA‘s rhythmic melodies. It’s a wordy song, as Soyou sing-speaks her way through both verses and chorus. It’s also quite short, coming in at well-under three minutes. This brief foray is fitting given PDA‘s lack of development. At its heart, it’s a simple pop/dance track without much ambition. Soyou’s fantastic vocals are underutilized, making if feel as if any K-pop star could have performed this in a similar manner. But as far as trend-chasing goes, she pulls off PDA‘s influences with reliable flair.
