Sadly, it’s been a long time since I’ve been interested in any Infinite-related music. If you would have shown me that statement a decade ago I would’ve been shocked, but their newer material just hasn’t lived up to the potential we know they have. However, as a longtime fan I still feel loyal to the members and that loyalty demands that I give Lee Sungyeol’s new solo track Asteroid (소행성) a short write-up.
Of all the members, Sungyeol is the one I’d least expect to hear solo music from. His parts in Infinite songs are often limited, so it’s nice to hear him stretch himself here. The performance is stronger and more powerful than I’d imagined, though there’s clearly a lot of studio polish being added to the mix. The song itself is — unfortunately — quite dull. Earnest midtempos like this tend to drift in one ear and out the other unless the music does something unexpected or novel. I can predict Asteroid‘s every move before it happens, which leads to a rote listen. It’s a song that doesn’t really need to exist, but you could say that about a lot of unambitious solo tracks.
