Across their past few comebacks, EVNNE have carved out an upbeat pop/rock sound. This genre may not be unique among boy groups, but they pull it off well. However, it does make me wonder how fans of their debut era feel, as this is quite a change in style from club bangers like Trouble. New track How Can I Do is another reinvention of sorts, though it’s more of a sidestep than a full leap into something different.
How Can I Do‘s brash delivery picks up right where February’s Hot Mess left off, though this feels more like the comedown after the party. The tempo is decidedly slower here, loping around rather than exploding with intensity. In this way, EVNNE are able to show a different version of themselves. There are a few moments sprinkled throughout the track that remind me of a modern interpretation of the slinky r&b/pop that Teen Top used to deliver in the early 2010’s.
With this said, How Can I Do lacks the sonic signatures to really grab hold of listeners’ ears. Despite a gutsy performance, the song keeps a steady line, sacrificing melodic range for an easy groove. The rhythm of the chorus is catchy, but the dynamics within the song stay mostly monotone without any distinct highs and lows. It’s consistent but not particularly engaging. Even a late-song breakdown maintains this stifled energy.
