Oh, AMPERS&ONE. You debuted with such a strong track, but since then it’s been dimished returns for every single comeback. The guys have quite a few great b-sides to their name (and their new album’s highlight medley suggests there will be more), but their title tracks have struggled to harness any hint of unique identity.
New single That’s That (그게 그거지) is another entry in the group’s generic assembly line. Like previous efforts, it’s polished and well-executed in a workmanlike way. But listening to That’s That, all I can do is think about other boy groups. FNC Entertainment can’t seem to decide whether they want AMPERS&ONE to be a P1Harmony Jr., a bright, quirky energy like TWS or a polished pop product like RIIZE. As a result, their music does a little of everything but doesn’t do any of it in a memorable way.
My advice? Turn to the most successful b-sides in your discography and find a pathway there. From what I’ve heard, AMPERS&ONE would do well to fully embrace a big EDM party sound. The light hip-hop-infused pop sheen that characterizes That’s That isn’t doing anything for them, regardless how well they perform it. It’s like the knockoff of a name brand — serviceable in a pinch but never the first thing a listener will turn to.
