On June 26, actress Shin Se Kyung’s agency released a statement online.
They revealed that the prosecution had requested a two-year prison sentence for the perpetrator who continuously cyber-bullied the actress.
This garnered much attention as it was an extreme punishment for an online malicious comment case.
According to the agency, the defendant has been anonymously active on online platforms for a long time, repeatedly making threats, malicious slander, spreading false information, and insulting comments against Shin Se Kyung and her fans, family, and acquaintances.
Due to this, it has been revealed that Shin Se Kyung and those around her have suffered severe mental distress.
Currently, the defendant is under police arrest and awaiting the first trial.
In particular, the case of cyberbullying leading to an actual arrest and sentencing is rare in the entertainment industry.
At the trial, the defendant’s legal representative appealed for leniency.
The defendant, who has been living in seclusion, is currently working a part-time job for 14 hours a week in hopes of returning to society. The defendant also reportedly stated, “I admit to all charges.”
However, Shin Se Kyung’s agency responded, “We have secured additional malicious posts and evidence related to the malicious commenter, and we plan to respond to similar cases in the future with the same standards.”
The agency also added, “In order to prevent the recurrence of innocent people suffering due to someone’s distorted desires, perpetrators must be responsible for their actions, no matter how long it takes. The valuable tips from fans have been a great help.”
