Ryu Hye Young has shared her thoughts on her upcoming drama “Law and The City”!
“Law and The City” follows five associate attorneys—Ahn Ju Hyeong (Lee Jong Suk), Kang Hui Ji (Mun Ka Young), Cho Chang Won (Kang You Seok), Bae Mun Jeong (Ryu Hye Young), and Ha Sang Gi (Im Seong Jae)—as they navigate the challenges and triumphs of their daily lives. These salaried lawyers, employed by law firms, commute each day to the bustling legal district of Seocho.
Ryu Hye Young, known for her strong, steady voice and delicate, expressive eyes, will be playing a lawyer for the first time. Speaking about why she joined the drama, Ryu Hye Young said, “I had my first meeting with the director, and I really enjoyed it. I always dream of being on a joyful set, and I felt that working with the director and other actors would make that possible.”
The actress also showed a strong connection to her character, remarking, “The situations Mun Jeong faces are not much different from what my peers are going through right now. Since we are about the same age, I felt I could portray her well.” She added, “I was drawn to the role because I thought I could share those concerns with viewers through Mun Jeong. She’s an ordinary person, which makes her more relatable and easier for people to connect with.”
In the drama, Bae Mun Jeong is a character whose blunt way of speaking contrasts with her warm heart and genuine care for others. Describing Mun Jeong’s bright personality, which has a bit of a kick, Ryu Hye Young used a food analogy by saying, “She’s like adding Cheongyang chili peppers to a hearty bowl of soybean paste stew.”
Explaining her approach to the role, she went on, “As I got to know Mun Jeong, I realized that compared to her deep affection for people, I might fall short in that area. While acting, I tried to care more about others, especially the people around Mun Jeong, and to approach them with sincerity. To do that, I aimed to present myself as naturally and comfortably as possible while finding the right tone for the role.”
Ryu Hye Young made a bold transformation not only in her character but also in her appearance. “The director said it would be nice if a sense of charm came through, so after some discussion, we decided to bring that out by cutting my hair short,” she said. With added focus on styling, there is growing interest in how Ryu Hye Young’s efforts will shape the character of Bae Mun Jeong.
Finally, Ryu Hye Young said, “If you watch ‘Law and The City’ casually while eating, rather than trying to focus too hard, you will find yourself naturally drawn in and empathizing with it before you even realize it.”
“Law and The City” will premiere on July 5 at 9:20 p.m. KST. Check out the latest teaser for the drama here!
