The upcoming film “The Ugly” has unveiled a deeper look at Park Jung Min’s dual roles!
Directed by Yeon Sang Ho, “The Ugly” follows the story of Im Dong Hwan (Park Jung Min), the son of Im Young Gyu (Kwon Hae Hyo)—a blind man who has become a skilled seal artisan—as he investigates the mysterious death of his mother, whose body was secretly buried for the past 40 years.
Park Jung Min will take on dual roles in the film, portraying both the young Im Young Gyu—a visually impaired master of seal engraving—and his son Im Dong Hwan. He plays a husband who has never seen his wife’s face and a son searching for the mother he’s never seen since birth.
Notably, the idea for the dual roles came from Park Jung Min himself. He shared, “If it’s a film made with good intentions and meaning, I wanted to contribute in my own way. I asked the director who would be playing the younger Im Young Gyu, and when he said it hadn’t been decided yet, I said I’d like to take on the challenge [and proposed the dual roles].”
To portray Im Young Gyu, Park Jung Min wore a wig and special clouded contact lenses, and he mastered the craft of seal engraving.
Director Yeon Sang Ho said, “He showed great dedication, from studying the script to personally learning seal engraving techniques.”
He added, “Im Dong Hwan is a character whose reactions while listening to the five interviews are especially important, and since he expressed them in an unconventional way, it makes the film even more immersive.”
“The Ugly” is set to hit theaters in September.
