On June 26, the 12th Criminal Division of the Seoul Western District Court sentenced Mr. A (79) to three years in prison on charges of attempted murder.
The court did not accept Mr. A’s claim that he did not intend to kill.
Considering the method of the crime and the weapon used, it is judged that the defendant committed the crime while recognizing that his actions could result in the victim’s death.

They also found it difficult to accept the reason for the crime.
Since the victim is not responsible for the breakdown of the relationship between the defendant and his son, it is difficult to accept the reason for the crime, and it seems to be a one-sided venting of anger.

In regards to the sentence, they revealed that they considered that he admitted to the crime, that he was a first-time offender, and that because he was old, he had a low risk of repeat offenses.
However, netizens were baffled at the prison sentence.

- “Why did he stab his daughter-in-law when he was mad at his son?!”
- “How does stabbing someone multiple times and saying they didn’t have any intention to kill make sense?”
- “Only three years…?”
Mr. A was brought to trial on charges of stabbing his daughter-in-law, a woman in her 50s, with a weapon several times in their home on the morning of January 10.
It was reported that although the victim suffered fractured ribs, her life was not in danger.
