Netflix’s upcoming drama “Aema” has released a new set of character stills!

Set in 1980s Chungmuro, “Aema” is a fictional comedy that delves into the fierce realities behind the glitz and glamour of the film industry. It follows the struggles and triumphs of two actresses, Hee Ran (Lee Ha Nee) and Joo Ae (Bang Hyo Rin), during the creation of “Madame Aema,” the adult film that took South Korea by storm in the early 1980s.

The newly unveiled stills offer a glimpse into the diverse characters involved in the film’s production.

Lee Ha Nee stars as Jung Hee Ran, radiating the charisma of a top actress of the era with her glamorous outfit, hairstyle, and accessories. Hee Ran is a renowned star who has won Best Actress at an international film festival but turns down the lead role in “Madame Aema” after declaring she’ll no longer take on provocative roles.

Speaking about the character, Lee Ha Nee shared, “She’s a woman of elegance and unshakable presence. I wanted her charisma to come through even when she’s just standing still.”

Bang Hyo Rin plays Shin Joo Ae, a rookie actress with no prior experience who is unexpectedly cast in the lead role. From a still capturing her modest appearance to another scene capturing her riding a horse along the beach, the stills hint at her bold transformation into “Madame Aema” leading lady.

Bang Hyo Rin described her character as “bold, confident, and someone with strong convictions.”

Jin Sun Kyu plays Goo Joong Ho, the ambitious head of Shinsung Film—the production company behind “Madame Aema.” A thriving figure in the cutthroat Chungmuro film scene, Joong Ho is a man who stops at nothing to achieve success. His fierce gaze in the stills reflects his ambition and obsession with money and box office success.

Jin Sun Kyu described the character as “someone who truly loves film—but whose approach is heavily driven by money.”

Cho Hyun Chul takes on the role of rookie director Kwak In Woo, who is making his directorial debut with “Madame Aema.” Driven by passion, he dreams of creating a film infused with his personal vision and philosophy. One still shows him buried in stacks of scripts as he works on the screenplay, leaving viewers to wonder whether he can pull off his first big project.

Cho Hyun Chul described Kwak In Woo as “someone who faces constant rejection, is extremely timid, yet full of ambition—often leading to frustration and self-doubt.”

“Aema” is set to premiere on August 22. Stay tuned!
