Lee Bo Young has shared her thoughts on her upcoming drama “Mary Kills People”!
“Mary Kills People” follows the story of Woo So Jung (Lee Bo Young), a doctor who illegally assists terminally ill patients with euthanasia, and a detective who tracks her down.
Newly released stills from the upcoming drama show Woo So Jung in the emergency room, busily treating patients and reviewing medical charts. With a serious expression on her face, she gives instructions to other doctors and does her best to treat critically ill patients quickly and efficiently. What could be the shocking reason that Woo So Jung—a doctor who saves patients at the brink of death—ended up becoming someone who helps them die?
Lee Bo Young shared that the timing of “Mary Kills People” felt like fate, saying, “Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about medically assisted death. My parents are getting older, and I also personally feel like it’s the right time for me to start having these kinds of conversations. So naturally, I became more interested in the topic. Around that time, I read a news article about a couple in Canada who chose to undergo medically assisted death together, and I happened to be having a serious conversation about it with my husband at the time.”
She continued, “At a time when I was deeply reflecting on questions like ‘How should we accept death?’ and ‘How can we end our lives with dignity?’, I received the script for ‘Mary Kills People’ and cried a lot after reading it. I realized that physician-assisted death isn’t simply about choosing to die because of old age—it could also be another way to preserve human dignity in the midst of suffering. It used to be a difficult topic to talk about, but now even people around me have started bringing it up. I feel like the time has come when we can finally have these conversations together.”
Lee Bo Young concluded by explaining how she portrayed the character of Woo So Jung. She remarked, “I felt that Woo So Jung is, at her core, a warm-hearted person who genuinely wants to help other people who are in pain. She’s someone who can’t turn a blind eye to others’ suffering. She wants to save people in pain, even if it puts her in danger.”
She added, “While acting, I kept in mind that although Woo So Jung’s choices may seem ‘wrong’ to some, they are decisions made from a sincere and kind heart that wants to help others.”
“Mary Kills People” is set to premiere on August 1 at 10 p.m. KST.
