NCT Wish’s buoyant Surf has proven to be a real grower, as summer-themed songs often are for me. The group is spoiling fans with multiple pre-releases for their upcoming mini album, with new track Baby Blue the second in line before the title track is unveiled next week. By its very nature, Baby Blue has less purchase with me than Surf did. It has its upbeat moments, but the overall arrangement is much more fitful. The bombastic chorus pulls everything together in an off-kilter way, but it’s the obvious peak within a song that often sputters. In this day and…

New K-pop trio RE:WIND impressed me big time with their pre-debut RE:SET earlier this year. I also enjoyed the early-2000’s pastiche of Forever even if a muddled arrangement dulled much of its effect. The guys recently released their first EP and have now unveiled the music video for new track Little Too Late. Like Forever, I wish this song carried just a bit more punch and went full Nsync/BSB on us, but I still appreciate the blend of Y2K sounds and a more modern atmospheric energy. The production leans into both directions and benefits from its most dramatic moments. The…

New trio In A Minute made their debut earlier this year, but without a music video to promote their song I never wrote about them on the blog. Now, they’ve returned with their first comeback and their first video. How We Do has a refreshing funk pop sound that begs for further development. At two and a half minutes, there’s not much space for How We Do to grow into much of anything, but its bright energy and upbeat rhythms are promising. The vocals are smooth and polished, drawing even more attention than the song itself. I wish the chorus…

Last week, EXO’s Chanyeol pre-released the incredibly soft Happy Accident as a teaser for his new album. When listening to that song, I hoped he had something with more bite coming down the line next. Throughout his solo career, Chanyeol has experimented with rock textures and that’s proven to be a good match for him. With Upside Down, he returns to that well. The difference is that, in 2025 there are many more artists playing within this soundscape. What once felt daringly grungy now comes across as the latest in a trend, and that can dull a song’s overall effect.…

AB6IX are like K-pop’s “little engine that could.” They’re far past their commercial peak, yet keep churning out new music with regularity. And, that music often carries an upbeat energy that makes it feel as if the group is just getting started. New single Stupid takes an emotive approach, recalling K-pop’s early efforts in pulling rock music into its orbit. If you told me this was a long-lost demo from 2012, I’d believe you. Stupid has the surging, polished sound of early-2010’s classics like 2NE1’s Ugly — effortlessly anthemic even as its edges are smoothed into a fine pop product.…

Though IVE have occasionally dipped into different genres, they’ve enjoyed their biggest chart success with a bombastic pop sound. You don’t have to look any further than this year’s Rebel Heart and Attitude, with the anthemic pre-release easily outperforming the actual title track. New single XOXZ sees them returning to an edgier hip-hop sound with underwhelming results. I’m not sure how many fans were clamoring for “IVE over a trap beat,” but if that’s been your greatest desire you’re in luck with XOXZ. The group takes a much more minimalist approach here, with sparse production and a chorus driven by…

“A zombie apocalypse.” 17 minutes ago Zhang Ling He skyrocketed to fame with roles in Love Between Fairy and Devil (2022), My Journey to You (2023), and The Princess Royal (2024). But with stardom comes problems—and his latest public appearance turned into a nightmare. On August 8, Ling He arrived in Changsha ahead of a scheduled event. However, sasaeng-like fans quickly discovered his hotel and leaked the location online. Soon, massive crowds formed outside, overwhelming staff and guests. Shockingly, one fan even infiltrated the hotel a day early, hiding overnight in a storage room just to get close to him.…
