NCT Dream’s new album is right around the corner and they’re promoting it with double title tracks. We’ll have to wait to hear Chiller on Monday alongside the album release, but the guys have pre-released opening track BTTF today. The song blends the old with the new, much like the retro-futurism of the music video. I have such a difficult time with NCT releases. There are many songs I feel like I would absolutely love without all the shouting. I don’t automatically dislike shouting in pop music, but something about NCT’s distinct, blustery blend is often like nails on a…
Following up their promotions for Japanese single Different, LE SSERAFIM have released a music video for its b-side Kawaii. As they clearly want you to know from the producer tag attached to its title, this song was composed by popular Japanese musician Gen Hoshino. This is quite a coup for the group, instantly lending Kawaii a sense of artistic flair it might have lacked if it had emerged from a song camp. You can hear this quirkiness throughout Kawaii, though overall the song adheres to popular percussive trends of the moment. Melodically, it sounds as if it wants to be…

I’ve been riding hard for One Love One Heart ever since their debut in 2022. I truly think their first album LOVE1 is one of the best J-pop albums… ever? It’s been more of a mixed bag since then, but even their most generic J-pop sounds have been buoyed by the natural charm of the members. I’ve always loved the concept of mixed-gender groups and One Love One Heart’s young age makes for a more musically interesting concept than the swaggy nature of Korea’s counterparts (KARD, ALLDAY PROJECT). One of my biggest issues with the group’s more recent work is…
