TXT’s new (full) album weighs in at eight tracks and a paltry twenty-one minutes. This brevity isn’t unique to TXT and I don’t mean to call them out specifically, but it’s representative of choices the K-pop industry is currently making. So much effort seems to go into everything surrounding the music, even as the actual songs grow shorter and less developed. In this case, that effort includes music videos for each of the members’ solo tracks. In keeping with the truncated nature of the album, I’ll be writing mini reviews for each song as the videos are released. As a…
Say My Name debuted last year as the first idol group on Kim Jaejoong’s agency iNKODE. That debut didn’t do anything for me, but their follow-up ShaLala showed promise. Now, it’s time for them to take on a summer concept with new single iLy, which ambitiously interpolations Frankie Valli’s iconic 1967 classic Can’t Take My Eyes Off You. In fact, the song launches with a full-on cover of Can’t Take My Eyes Off You before judiciously using that melody for its chorus. Chopped stabs of brass are also sampled as part of the instrumental. Taken together, the approach is heavy-handed…
The upcoming film “The Ugly” has unveiled a deeper look at Park Jung Min’s dual roles! Directed by Yeon Sang Ho, “The Ugly” follows the story of Im Dong Hwan (Park Jung Min), the son of Im Young Gyu (Kwon Hae Hyo)—a blind man who has become a skilled seal artisan—as he investigates the mysterious death of his mother, whose body was secretly buried for the past 40 years. Park Jung Min will take on dual roles in the film, portraying both the young Im Young Gyu—a visually impaired master of seal engraving—and his son Im Dong Hwan. He plays…
At the end of each month, I look back at my three favorite title tracks by K-pop artists. I take my own ratings into account, but there’s a bit of wiggle room as certain songs tend to grow or fade. July 2025 Overall Thoughts In the context of this year, the past two months have been pretty strong. Or rather, they’ve been pretty solid. I say this because there have been many good-to-great releases but frustratingly few knock-my-socks-off standouts. However, sometimes quantity compensates for quality and that was the case for the first half of July. In contrast to last year’s…
