Squid Game star Oh Yeong Su‘s appeal trial after being charged with indecent assault is set to resume soon. The 81-year-old has received a new date following an initial postponement.
According to legal sources, the hearing for his appeal is scheduled to take place on August 12.
Originally, a verdict was expected on June 3, but due to overlap with the presidential election, the date was postponed to the 10th, and then rescheduled again to July 1. It has now been confirmed that the trial will resume in August, with a witness examination scheduled for that day.
In March last year, the first trial found Oh guilty and sentenced him to eight months in prison, suspended for two years, along with mandatory completion of a 40-hour sexual assault treatment program. Both sides appealed. The prosecution cited a lenient sentence, while Oh Yeong Su claimed factual errors, misapplication of law, and unfair sentencing.
The victim gave relatively consistent testimony, which aligned with entries from her diary written around the time of the incident. She informed people around her about the assault, and since the #MeToo movement was spreading in the theater community at the time, she went to see the play Snow in March to receive an apology. The testimony also matches details from her counseling sessions, indicating that it’s consistent with what only someone who had experienced the event could say.

Oh Yeong Su is accused of forcibly hugging and kissing the victim on the cheek on two occasions in front of her residence in Daegu in 2017, when he was in the city for a theater performance. The actor admits to holding A’s hand on a walking trail and visiting her residence, but has consistently denied any misconduct.
When Squid Game gained popularity, the victim suddenly demanded an apology, which caught him off guard. But in order not to cause harm to fellow actors and producers, he issued a formal apology.
The defendant has lived 80 years without committing any crime. He has devoted his life to theater, which he considers his calling. He may have lost everything because of this case, but we ask for leniency so that he can at least restore his honor and finish his life on stage.
