“The Defects” director has shared behind-the-scenes stories of the series!

Based on a popular webtoon, “The Defects” is an action thriller about children who have been abandoned by their adoptive parents—and their fight for survival and revenge.

With the premiere just a month away, director Oh Gi Hwan opened up about the project’s key themes and behind-the-scenes insights. Oh Gi Hwan remarked, “This is the work that asks the most fundamental questions out of everything I’ve directed so far. The scriptwriting process took particularly long, and even as the director, I can’t wait to watch it myself.” He added, “’The Defects’ makes you reflect on universal family relationships. I approached the dark story in hopes that viewers would find each other’s light through it.”

The director also praised the cast, highlighting their unique strengths. “Yum Jung Ah was, in a word, a general—a true commander. Her acting skills go without saying, but what stood out was her ability to fully grasp the overall situation of the drama. Whenever I wavered, she calmly helped steer the direction of the story, and that was a huge support for me as a director.”

About Won Jin Ah, he said, “She felt like a special agent assigned to a mission. She handled most of her action scenes without a double and anchored all the emotionally charged scenes with great control.”

He continued, “Both Choi Young Joon and Dex embodied their characters with confidence and made a powerful impression. All of the actors came together for a flawless ensemble.”

Picking “a unique narrative,” “a tension-filled story,” and “diverse action” as the drama’s key elements, the director explained, “’The Defects’ sets itself apart with its fast-paced, intense incidents. The fierce clash and coexistence of darkness and light, along with its cinematic storytelling, will deliver an electrifying thrill to viewers.”

Speaking about what to watch for in the drama, Oh Gi Hwan commented, “’The Defects’ has some of the most daring concepts I’ve ever worked with. That intensity drew me in, but I also realized that something too strong is not actually genuinely strong. So I tried to weave in moments of comedy and emotion between the high-stakes scenes.”

He concluded, “I hope this series encourages viewers to look again at the people beside them. That’s the goal and message I wanted to convey through this work. I hope you enjoy it without pressure and look forward to the premiere.”

“The Defects” is set to premiere on July 21 at 10 p.m. KST.
