It’s been a decade since SISTAR, which was once K-pop’s undisputed “Summer Queens”, released their iconic hit “Shake It”. Though the group officially disbanded in 2017 after seven years together, their 2015 anthem remains one of the most memorable summer tracks in K-pop history.
On June 22, 2015, SISTAR dropped their third EP “Shake It”, led by the title track of the same name. Produced by hitmaker duo Duble Sidekick, “Shake It” was a retro-infused dance song with explosive brass elements, funky grooves, and an irresistible hook that turned heads across South Korea.
From their powerful vocals to high-energy performances, SISTAR (Hyolyn, Bora, Soyou, Dasom) thrived in the summer spotlight. Their performances consistently matched the season’s heat, earning them praise for their strong physical presence and refreshing musical style.
After charming audiences with the breezy “Touch My Body” in 2014, SISTAR returned a year later with “Shake It”, delivering an even more polished and infectious summer vibe. The track wasn’t just catchy, it was also universally appealing, with easy-to-follow choreography that made it a staple at festivals, school performances, and dance challenges.
The song’s popularity translated into major success on music shows. In July 2015, “Shake It” claimed the No.1 spot on Mnet’s “M! Countdown” (July 2) and SBS’s “Inkigayo” (July 5), triumphing over fierce competitors like BIGBANG’s “Bang Bang Bang” and AOA’s “Heart Attack”. On the charts, the song topped Melon’s weekly chart during the fourth week of June (22nd–28th), further cementing its status as a smash hit.
Despite their winning streak, SISTAR chose to disband in May 2017, despite still enjoying peak popularity. Their decision to leave while still beloved by fans was bittersweet but earned widespread respect. Since then, the members have pursued solo careers as singers and actresses.
However, not all transitions were easy. In a candid moment on SBS’s documentary series “Bodymentary”, member Soyou admitted that she had once considered retiring after the group’s disbandment, stating, “I actually thought I would retire when SISTAR disbanded”, adding, “I was scared of being alone.”
