The world is buzzing over “K-Pop Demon Hunters”, an action-packed animated film blending K-pop glamour with supernatural thrills. Released on June 20, the Netflix original soared to No. 1 globally in the film category by the next day, according to FlixPatrol.
Set in a vibrant alternate Korea, the story follows girl group Huntrix and its members, including Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who moonlight as demon slayers behind their chart-topping performances. Produced by Sony Pictures Animation and directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the film merges global animation with unmistakably Korean cultural elements like Namsan Tower, hanok rooftops, and grim reapers.
K-pop fans were thrilled to hear TWICE members Jeongyeon, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung contribute the electrifying OST “Takedown,” while actor Ahn Hyo-seop voices the leader of boy-band Saja Boys, who is also a demon. Meanwhile, Lee Byung-hun gives chilling life to the demon kind Gwi-ma in both English and Korean.
As of June 21, the film ranked No. 1 in 22 countries, including the U.S., U.K., Japan, France, Australia, Germany, Italy, and its home country South Korea, marking a powerful fusion of Korean pop culture and global storytelling.
