There could be financial motivations behind it.
A 57-year-old woman and her son-in-law are under investigation for a shocking case of attempted murder in Ganghwa County, Incheon, involving the mutilation of the victim’s genitals. The Incheon District Court held a pretrial detention hearing for the two suspects, and a decision regarding their arrest is expected as early as today.
The woman, identified only as Ms. A, was urgently detained on suspicion of stabbing her husband multiple times in the face and arms, and then mutilating his genitals with a weapon in an attempt to kill him. The crime took place around 1 a.m. on August 1 inside a café operated by her son-in-law, Mr. B, who is in his 30s. Mr. B is accused of assisting in the crime by restraining the victim with tape.
Initially, Ms. A told police she committed the act out of suspicion that her husband was having an affair. However, investigators are now focusing on a possible financial motive, citing the brutal nature of the crime and the unusual involvement of a third party — the son-in-law.
“Considering the gruesome method and the fact that a third party, the son-in-law, was involved in a domestic issue, we are also looking into whether property or other financial factors were involved.”
Ms. A reportedly carried out grotesque acts after the mutilation, including destroying parts of the severed organ in front of her husband and flushing some of it down the toilet. The victim, who was intoxicated at the time and unable to resist, was taken to the hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
Mr. B initially denied involvement, but later admitted to assisting in the crime, claiming he acted under his mother-in-law’s orders. Prior to the hearing, both suspects refused to answer questions from reporters regarding their motives or feelings of remorse. After the review, the court issued arrest warrants for both, citing the risk of evidence tampering and flight. Ms. A is being charged with attempted murder, while Mr. B faces charges of attempted parricide.
Police are continuing their investigation to determine the full motive behind the crime, including whether the incident stemmed from economic disputes and how the victim came to be intoxicated at the time.
