iKON’s Jay made his solo debut back in 2023 with a smooth R&B sound that was high on style but low on the kind of addictive melodies that usually make my ears perk up. He’s set to release a new album next week, and prior to that he’s dropped pre-release track We Can’t Explain.
This one’s a bit boppier, offering a laidback bounce alongside tropical synths. However, the song remains quite subdued even as it builds to its chorus. Then, the instrumental flips completely, chopped and augmented to form an unusual centerpiece that guts the song open for parts. This approach could have been interesting, but there’s not enough going on within We Can’t Explain‘s muted palette for this quirky production to amount to much.
