Jung Chaeyeon has shared new insights into her role in the upcoming JTBC drama “Beyond the Bar”!
“Beyond the Bar” follows the story of Kang Hyo Min (Jung Chaeyeon), an upstanding and confident yet inexperienced rookie attorney at the law firm Yullim. Under the mentorship of Yoon Seok Hoon (Lee Jin Uk), a cold but exceptionally skilled partner attorney, Hyo Min gradually grows into a true lawyer as she navigates the challenges of the legal world.
Jung Chaeyeon revealed that she was instantly drawn to the script, saying, “The storyline wasn’t typical, and as I read it, it made me think in so many different ways. I thought, ‘Oh, you could see it from this angle or interpret it like that,’ and it made me really want to take on the role.”
She added that the script’s charm extended to her character Kang Hyo Min, explaining, “Hyo Min perfectly embodies the drama’s [Korean] subtitle, ‘Lawyers Who Dream of Becoming Lawyers.’ She becomes a lawyer and gets closer to the job she dreamed of, but even then, she keeps dreaming.”
She added, “As a newcomer to society, Hyo Min sometimes lets her emotions get ahead of her, preventing her from seeing situations objectively. But I think that’s only possible because she approaches each case with such sincerity, and I loved that about her.”
Playing a professional role for the first time in her acting career came with its own pressures. “It was a role I’d never tried before, so I was really worried,” she confessed. “I even talked about my concerns with people around me, but in doing so, I think my fear turned into a ‘let’s give it a try’ mindset. Once I actually took on the role, I felt like I gained a bit of courage.”
At first, Jung Chaeyeon felt she wasn’t much like her character, but that changed during filming. “Because this drama deals with cases from various angles and perspectives, I developed a habit of looking at things from multiple viewpoints rather than just one,” she said. “And like Hyo Min, I think I’ve also become someone who immerses herself deeply once faced with a problem.”
Finally, when asked what kind of reputation she hopes to gain through “Beyond the Bar,” Jung Chaeyeon shared, “I want to be known as someone people want to work with. There are moments when you see Hyo Min and think, ‘Wow, she’s really good at her job.’ In real life, too, there are people you want to work with because of that. I’d be so happy if people said, ‘I want to work with that actress someday.’”
“Beyond the Bar” will premiere on August 2 at 10:40 p.m. KST.
