Kang Ki Young has shared his thoughts on his upcoming drama “Mary Kills People”!
“Mary Kills People” follows the story of Woo So Jung (Lee Bo Young), a doctor who illegally assists terminally ill patients with euthanasia, and a detective who tracks her down.
Kang Ki Young stars as Choi Dae Hyun, a former plastic surgeon whose medical license has been revoked. A longtime friend of Woo So Jung, he now assists her in helping terminally ill patients end their lives through euthanasia.
The newly released stills depict Choi Dae Hyun. In one image, Dae Hyun meditates with his eyes closed, surrounded by the soft glow of candlelight and the calming vibrations of a singing bowl. In another, he smiles gently as if to reassure someone, and in a different photo, he gazes into the distance, his expression revealing a mix of complex emotions.
Speaking about why he chose a drama that deals with medically assisted death, Kang Ki Young shared, “Because this subject hasn’t been explored much before, I approached it with caution,” adding, “There are many types of goodbyes in the world, but I think a prepared farewell, chosen by the individual, has its own unique meaning.”
He continued, “Since the drama centers around medically assisted death, most of the scenes naturally carry emotional weight. However, the banter and chemistry between So Jung and Dae Hyun help ease some of that heaviness, and I believe that played an important role in the tone of the drama.”
On how he prepared for his role, Kang Ki Young remarked, “Dae Hyun might seem carefree at times, but he’s someone who’s grown through pain. So I wouldn’t call it carefreeness—it’s more like inner strength that comes from experience. I felt that the synergy between the characters was the most powerful part of the story, and I focused a lot on how to bring that out.”
He also shared, “Even though Dae Hyun is a doctor, he’s one whose license was revoked, so he works underground. That took some of the pressure off when it came to using medical terminology.” He added, “Since the drama doesn’t just revolve around an unusual topic but is also filled with themes of family love, I hope viewers can relate, laugh, and cry along with us.”
The production team remarked, “Kang Ki Young is an actor whose warm demeanor and performances deeply resonate with viewers. His wide emotional range and heartfelt portrayal will add depth to the drama. Please look forward to his performance.”
“Mary Kills People” is set to premiere on August 1 at 10 p.m. KST.
