She missed out on an acting role.
Beauty and fame often go hand in hand, but one actress’s appearance caused her difficulty in the past.

Meng Zi Yi is a Chinese actress who made her acting debut in the 2016 series God of War, Zhao Yun. Her popularity continued to rise after she starred in the wuxia series The Legend of the Condor Heroes as Mu Nianci in 2017. Most recently, Meng played a supporting role in the 2025 historical drama Love in Pavilion.

During a recent appearance on the talk show Ifeng Talk, Meng revealed that she once missed out on a role simply because she’s too pretty. It happened back when Meng was just starting her acting career.

“I am pretty, but you can say I am not suitable for the role, or that I can’t carry it at this stage, or that you want someone more popular,” Meng said, recounting her story. “I’ll accept it! But saying I can’t act because I am too pretty? That made me question — is it wrong to be beautiful? Being beautiful shouldn’t be a sin!”

Thankfully, other productions have felt differently about her looks! Since her debut, Meng has played a variety of characters, including a melodrama antagonist in All Out of Love and a skilled warrior in the fantasy historical drama Ever Night.
